For 20 years, Ireland did not actually enforce EU law, but at least they had enough shame to undermine enforcement secretly,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/noyb.eu\/en\/former-meta-lobbyist-named-dpc-commissioner-meta-now-officially-regulates-itself\">Max Schrems of Noyb in a comment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as December last year, Meta was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/3627299\/meta-hit-with-263-million-fine-in-europe-over-2018-data-breach.html\">fined \u20ac251 million by the DPC<\/a>, when the company was considered to be in breach of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/562107\/general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr-requirements-deadlines-and-facts.html\">General Data Protection Regulation<\/a> (GDPR).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Irish government has appointed\u00a0Niamh Sweeney as a new member of the Data Protection Commission\u00a0(DPC), the country\u2019s data protection commission, which also has the main responsibility in the EU for monitoring that the big tech giants comply with European data protection laws.
